The Broken Lines Series
The Broken Lines series follows Michael Weir, a young man from the late 1960s who is thrust back in time to the battlefields of the Great War. Armed with knowledge of what is to come, he discovers that he is able to make small changes to history. However, every change that Michael makes causes rippling effects in the future that are both drastic and often tragic for those involved.
Across three novels, Michael’s attempts to change the fate of members of his own family cause him to interact with other soldiers and their families, inadvertently altering the course of their lives and history.
The series explores courage, comradeship, the randomness of war, and the devastating cost of altering time itself.

Author’s Note
The novels in the Broken Lines series were inspired by the wartime experiences of members of my own family and, like the non-fiction account of the Prentice brothers’ movements during WW1, draws upon extensive historical research carried out over many years, including military records, war diaries, contemporary accounts and family documents. While modern research tools, including AI-assisted searches, were occasionally used to help locate background information, the story, characters and manuscript are entirely my own work.

REVIEWS of ‘UNTIL THE DAY BREAK’
“Many WW1 books focus on the soldier’s experience in the front line - the attacks, counter-attacks and going ‘over the top’. Until the Day Break does include trench raids and night patrols but focuses more on the soldier’s life when not under fire - the route marches, fatigue duties, the constant exhaustion and stress - areas which are not often explored.”
“‘Until the Day Break’ was a delight to read. While I was initially concerned about combining the Great War with a time-slip story, the depiction of soldier’s lives behind the lines was handled with respect, and the storyline, based on a real trench raid, felt completely believable.”
“Iain has really breathed life into the characters. We see Michael evolving from an inexperienced youth thrown into an impossible situation, into a decisive soldier with a purpose. Tom is the dependable, stable, mentoring centre of their group, while Archie, the loyal friend, provides a degree of humour to the plot, even in the face of terrible odds. I wanted to know what happened to them all.”
